The first video game I ever played was Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo Nes. I can remember sitting in front of the TV for hours upon hours with my older brother Aodhan, making our way through the mushroom kingdom and trying to save the Princess from the evil King Bowser. These are some of my earliest memories and also one of the happiest. My brother Aodhan introduced me to video games at a very young age and for that, I will be forever grateful. Even today, when I start up Super Mario Bros and hear that all too familiar music play, I am whisked back to my childhood.

As much as I played this game as a kid, I never managed to complete it or at least not that I can remember. Last year I set out on a mission to finally complete the game and finish what my brother Aodhan and I had started all those years ago. I did some research and discovered that the game can be completed in quite a short period of time and it is actually quite notorious among speed runners. With the help of a few warp pipes, the game can be completed in roughly 10 minutes. Even with the help of the warp pipes however, I was in for a challenge.

Close, but no cigar.

I managed to make my way through the first few worlds with relative ease but it was world 8 that got the better of me. There is so much going on in each of the levels and very few power ups to help you on your way. I know there are a lot of people who think that this game is easy but for me, it was a challenge that had gotten the better of me for the best part of 30 years. So after more attempts than I care to admit, I managed to make it to world 8, level 3 and that was when I met with a terrible fate, the Hammer Bros. Trying to get passed them without getting hit was proving to be more than I could handle and two words seemed to pop up all too often… Game Over.

Up against one of the dreaded Hammer Bros.

After what felt like hundreds of attempts, I finally managed to make my way passed the Hammer Bros and to the last castle of the game. This was no ordinary castle however, it had a lot of tricks up its sleeve and as you can probably guess by now, it took me quite a few attempts before I eventually stood face to face with Bowser. The first time I got to Bowser, I died. The second time I got to Bowser, I died. I almost felt like giving up but gave it one more go and to my amazement, I managed to make it past Bowser, send him plummeting to his doom and finally saved the princess.

The End.

Finally completing this game for the first time was an amazing experience and I have completed it quite a few times since then. Super Mario Bro is a game that I return to time and time again, it is one of the all time great video games and one that will always hold a special place in my heart. If for some strange reason, you haven’t played Super Mario Bros yet then do yourself a favor and play it as soon as you can. If you played this as a kid and haven’t fired it up in years, I would highly recommend that you give it a go and take a glorious trip down memory lane.
